Gulf of America
GULF OF AMERICA is a feature film written and directed by Nick Geisler and produced through Salt Cellar Films.
The film follows a family who inherit a roadside motel in the middle of the desert, believing it may be their last real chance at stability in modern America. What begins as a fragile opportunity slowly curdles into a nightmare, exposing the darker machinery beneath the American dream.
As Cinematographer, my approach was rooted in optical clarity, restraint, and a painterly sense of dread. We wanted the image to feel timeless, cinematic, and brutally elegant — beautiful enough to seduce the audience, but controlled enough to let the horror seep in gradually.
The film was photographed spherically on the ARRI Alexa LF with Bausch & Lomb Ultra Baltar lenses, the same lens set used on MARIA and EL CONDE. That combination gave us a large-format image with emotional precision, subtle aberration, and a classic texture that felt appropriate for a story suspended between realism, myth, and nightmare.
Drawing visual inspiration from films such as NOCTURNAL ANIMALS, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, and THE HITCHER, we built a world of sun-scorched isolation, tense negative space, and quiet visual pressure. The goal was not to announce the horror, but to let it accumulate — frame by frame — until the landscape itself felt complicit.
