Big Boy
“Big Boi” follows a young man as he visits a sex worker to deal with an unexpected breakup. Collaborating with Jay Duplass and Michael Strassner, I wanted to create two worlds of our protagonist’s reality.
Since the short film primarily takes place in one 10x10 white-walled apartment bedroom, creating depth in the frame was our highest priority. Shot on the amazing Super Baltar lenses, they create an immense amount of three-dimensionality to the image, helping to add a cinematic flair to this pedestrian location.
The director was inspired by Sean Baker and wanted the film to have a grounded feeling with the camerawork. We held on wider angles, committing to real-time pacing and performance in the frame by the actors. This allowed us to punctuate the actor’s performance our lighting style.
Big Boi is currently in post production and aiming for a 2023 film festival run.
